February 15-17, 2003. The Washington, DC, metropolitan area was walloped with our biggest snow storm of the season and the 5th largest of all-time. Communities in the area received between 16"-36" of snow, and we here in Silver Spring/Wheaton were digging out of about 24 inches. Area public school systems closed for the week, and the University of Maryland postponed their home basketball game for a day in order to clean up their parking lots and pathways.

Now 14 months old, Emma Rose was a little under the weather (again!), which was fine since we couldn’t go anywhere anyway. It gave her time to practice her new vocabulary: “doggie,” “juice,” “cookie,” and even “thank you.” She had the chance to finally go outside after the snow slowed, and we cleared the walkways. She seemed fascinated with the whiteness of the environment and didn’t seem to mind the cool touch. Too bad we didn’t have a sled—we should have pulled her mini bathtub out. Oh well, we’ll save that for the next two feet of snow we get!
